4313_185621990292_509550292_6932237_2149398_n

Eastern Bloc | 7240 Clark, 2nd floor Montreal, QC

Eastern Bloc presents SIGHTandSOUND: an immersive video experience, over 2 nights, incorporating the work of 20 artists from Canada and the United States. Combining various forms of digital arts, these artists will collaborate in a manipulation of the space at the Eastern Bloc through the use of six projection screens, encapsulating the audience in waves of sound and video. The artists’ works will travel from one screen to the other, in random sequences, creating an onslaught of sensory stimuli.

Part I (May 29) is co-curated by Eliane Ellbogen (artistic director, Eastern Bloc) and Marie-Helene Parant (Share MTL). Part II (May 30) is curated by Eliane Ellbogen.

SIGHTandSOUND: Part I will captivate its audience with 2 hours of experimental audiovisual explorations. The works presented willencompass an interactive, ambient, and minimal approach to audio and visual collaborations amongst the following artists:

Katherine Liberovskaya (mtl) and Eric Létourneau (mtl); Marie-Hélène Parant (mtl), Angela di Lauro (mtl), and François Giroux (mtl); Chris Jordan (nyc) and Maxime Rioux (mtl); David Linton (nyc); CHiKA (nyc) and Jim Bell (mtl); and Eric Filion - Nokami (mtl) and Michael Trommer (to)

SIGHTandSOUND: Part II is a spasmic array of video mash-up works by artists using a strong audio-visual link in their repertoire. In contrast to Part I, transitions from one screen to another will be quick, sound will be fast and loud, and videos will be provocative and intense. Works will be shown by the following artists:

Jubal Brown (to), Beewoo (mtl), Ouananiche (mtl), Agor (mtl), Pete O’Hearn (to), Nwodtlem (to), Bear Witness (ottawa), and Meat Parade (gatineau)

Nocturne 2 | the Savoy, Metropolis | 22:00 | $30.00
Presented by 33mag

Traverse, 2009, World Premiere

In today’s connected world we have many new methods of collaborating, and many technical and artistic problems that arise in the process.

These two artists bring this chasm into focus and explore the possibilities given by these constraints.

This project intersects i8u’s minimal yet powerful sound sculptures and CHiKA’s geometric minimalist patterns to create a work that expresses the examination and limitations of itself.

France Jobin aka i8u is a sound/installation/web artist whose work has been released on ROOM40 (AUS), nvo (AU) and recently, a collaboration with Tomas Phillips on ATAK (JP). She has worked with Goem, Martin Tétreault and David Kristian.

CHiKA is a live media artist working in the international VJ and experimental music scene. Her performances vary from minimalist geometric patterns to unique compositions overflowing with a variety of forms and color.

Nocturne2

The many factions of dub converge onto one large stage to showcase just how far Jamaica’s roots reggae templates have evolved toward new genres in the hands of some of today’s hottest names.

None other than Skull Disco co-founder APPLEBLIM comes to Montreal for his Canadian debut and a DJ set that showcases the many point sof fusion between UK dubstep and Berlin techno. A seamless blend of echoes, bass, and delays leads us to the heavily anticipated collaboration between Canadian dub-don DEADBEAT and Berlin’s master vocalist of all things dub, PAUL ST. HILAIRE . The collaboration is something of a natural selection for MUTEK, given Deadbeat’s longstanding participation with MUTEK, and the fact that St. Hilaire has also performed at MUTEK events several times over the decade.

Next up, MODESELEKTOR and APPARAT join forces for the Canadian premiere of MODERAT , a stunning live audio-visual production accompanied by the striking video work of PFADFINDEREI . Again, MUTEK has a long history with both acts, as Apparat first appeared here in 2005 and Modeselektor performed here in 2006 and 2008.

And finally, the night winds to a tailspin with the breakneck dubstep assault of the Digital Mystiks’ MALA , in town for a Canadian debut DJ set.

Meanwhile, the SAVOY ROOM fills with the ambient soundscapes of EZEKIEL HONIG , CLINKER , I8U , NOVI_SAD , and AUN .

The Future Is Beautiful is a monthly event dedicated to bringing you the best electronic music that NYC has to offer. Our approach is simple and two-fold: by focusing on local talent rather than a genre or style, we shed a spot light on, and provide a forum for the variety of producers, performers and musicians that emanate from NYC. Additionally, we partner with like minded organizations from other urban centers, such as Philly, London, Chicago, Boston, LA and Berlin to provide a portal from which artists from those cities can connect to and perform for an open minded and supportive audience here.
