I N F I N I T Y

Infinity02, 2008 (30:38 min)

Unlimited or unmeasurable in extent of space, duration of time: the infinite nature of the fabric of space. CHiKA uses minimal objects in two-dimensional space to create a video work invoking the feeling of the unlimited possibilities, approaching the unmeasureable nature of the infinite. I8u’s soundscapes inspired by the concept of string theory mirror our limited understanding and imagination of these strings as they slip in and out of the dimensions we are aware of. The audio and visual moves from a closed world with perspective as its corresponding symbolic form.

Visuals

Chika Iijima is a live computer visuals artist working within New York’s expanded cinema community and VJ scene. Her videos implement geometric minimalist patterns and original graphics in unique, repetitive combinations. Chika has performed at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Mapping Festival (Geneva), the Bushwick Art Project (Brooklyn, NY), and the clubs Galapagos and Tonic, both in New York.

Sound

France Jobin aka i8u is a sound/installation/web artist residing in Montreal, Canada. i8u’s audio art can be qualified as “sound-sculpture.” It reveals powerful, opaque and complex sound environments where analog and digital meet. Her installation/web art can be said to follow a parallel path, incorporating both musical and visual elements.

color

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage.

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection. White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. White can represent a successful beginning. In heraldry, white depicts faith and purity.

Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown. Black denotes strength and authority. In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief. Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability.

Using these color and symbolic forms she create an infinite vision.
The movement of colors and minimal shapes triggers an immeasurable amount of emotional responses. The work moves from a closed world with perspective as its corresponding symbolic form. All possibilities would become realities, given infinite time and space.

Special OptoSonic Tea event, fundraiser for Issue Project Room

Featuring:
Lady Firefly (live visuals) + Paul Amitai (live sound)
Chika (live visuals) + bubblyfish (live sound)
Marie-Helene Parant (live visuals) + Jim Bell (live sound) (Montreal, Canada)
David Linton (live visuals + sound)
Katherine Liberovskaya/Peter Shapiro (live visuals) + Hitoshi Kojo (live sound) (Japan/CH)
Ursula Scherrer (live visuals) + Kato Hideki (live sound)

Invited artist/respondent-moderator: Bruce Tovsky

OptoSonic Tea is a new regular series of meetings dedicated to the convergence of live visuals with live sound which focuses on the visual component. These presentation-and-discussion meetings aim to explore different forms of live visuals (live video, live film, live slide projection and their variations and combinations) and the different ways they can come into interaction with live audio. Each evening features two different live visual artists or groups of artists who each perform a set with the live sound artists of their choice. The presentations are followed by an informal discussion about the artists’ practices over a cup of green tea. A third artist, from previous generations of visualists or related fields, is invited specifically to participate in this discussion so as to create a dialogue between current and past practices and provide different perspectives on the present and the future.

Organized by Katherine Liberovskaya and Ursula Scherrer

Bruce Tovsky is a visual/sound artist based in in Brooklyn, New York. After earning his MFA degree in Multimedia from Rutgers University in 1979, Tovsky began showing his video work across the USA, as well as Europe and Japan.

C H R O N O S

Chronos, a reference to the Greek, is an audio-visual representation of the experience and perception of subjective time. CHiKA’s abstract flickering imagery and Zach’s low frequency sine (Alpha) waves are used as a means of evoking rhythms that reflects a relaxed, meditative awareness. This collaborative concept was inspired from a technique called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Francine Shapiro, a psychologist who discovered that alternating stimulation between the right and left hemispheres of the brain through repetitive horizontal eye movements; tapping of the hands and/or oscillating sound effects somehow pulls memories from the subconscious into consciousness.
